NAU Native American Cultural Center

Client: Northern Arizona University
Location: Flagstaff, Arizona
Completion Date: October 2011
McCormack Landscape Architecture teamed with Native American planner Ted Jojola and the Phoenix architectural firm Studio Ma to design this cultural center for Northern Arizona University. The design team conducted Focus Groups and Design Charettes on the campus with Native American students, faculty, staff and community members to develop the design program and project themes for
the new facility.

The landscape theme that was developed focused on "building in nature" by using native plants throughout the site. The entrance into the site and building from the east was very important, as well as providing a path through the trees with benches. The landscape design will also feature a paved south-facing courtyard and open lawn for outdoor events and functions. The project has been designed to LEED standards.
The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in October 2011
was celebrated by Native and non-Native dignitaries
and guests from throughout Indian Country.
